In 2008, the Herman Leonard Jazz Archive received a generous grant from the GRAMMY Foundation Grant Program. After the devastating loss of his New Orleans studio along with thousands of silver gelatin prints following Hurricane Katrina, it became strikingly clear that this historically significant archive must be preserved. During the three-year project, over 65,000 negatives were digitally scanned, given numbered codes and metadata with highly detailed information containing the musician names, date and location of the photograph, description of the event, and negative size. The archive of physical negatives has been cataloged, which alphabetically group the photographs by musician's names. Significant images that were damaged have been digitally restored. During this time, Herman Leonard assembled a new book entitled JAZZ by Herman Leonard, in which he was able to include many of the newly discovered images realized from the Grammy Foundation Grant. Through this website, the Herman Leonard Jazz Archive is now making available for the public to view, many of these historic and unseen moments in jazz history.
